On Tuesday, Linden Labs announced they were ending development on Dio, Versu and Creatorverse.
The announcement itself isn't really a big deal. Companies cull their product line all the time. It's part of the natural cycle of business and works to keep companies healthy.
What is unusual is that this is a top level decision coming at a time when the man in the top level position has only worked for the company a little more than two weeks--hardly time to unpack his stationary.
The timing of this decision suggests to me a few options:
1) New CEO, Ebbe Altberg is SuperManager and knew instantly upon arrival what must be done.
2) New CEO, Ebbe Alterberg is an idiot and makes decisions without much thought.
3) The CEO is just a puppet and the company is really run by the Board of Directors. (This is a common theory among Linden Lab watchers as longtime board member, Mitch Kapor has always had a very active role in the management of the company.
4) The CEO is just a puppet and the company is really run by middle management. This situation is actually fairly common and not a horrible way to run a company. Often middle management is much more informed and much more invested in the company than hired gun upper management.
